About Night Vision Devices

Night vision devices collect the existing ambient light, including moonlight, starlight, or IR light, through the front lens. This light, which is made of photons, is converted to electrons by passing through a photocathode tube. The electrons are then amplified through a chemical and electrical process and thrown against a phosphorous screen that converts the electrons back to visible light, which the user sees through the eyepiece. The image is a clear, green-hued, amplified recreation of the scene. It is green because of the phosphorous screen, which converts light to green, as human eyes are more sensitive to green light than light of any other color.
